Good for the money but not great -- 3.5 stars plus 1/2 a star for $ value

I wanted to see if this would be a good replacement for a Golden Melody and the answer is no for sure. The only advantage it has over the GM is that the mouthpiece is nice and smooth so it doesn't catch my beard, which the GM does.

However, for the money it's a good equal temper tuned harp. I got an Eb so I could mess around with Bb jazz blues, so it's a fairly high-tuned harp.

Out of the box, hole 10 didn't blow well and didn't draw at all. I opened it up and blow reeds on 9 and 10 were a bit warped and didn't sit flush against the reed plate. Even with some tinkering it still isn't fully responsive, especially on the draw which sometimes doesn't play at all. Overblows are not great, even with some tinkering. The tuning is pretty accurate so that's good.

It's a good harp for the money but not a great harp in general. If you're a beginner or intermediate and not worried about overblows, and if you want an inexpensive equal temper tuned harp, then this is a really good choice. I'd imagine lower keys are more responsive.

I don't think I'd buy another one, but I also think I'm getting to a point in my playing where I need to start dropping serious money on custom harps for overblowing, especially for jazz playing. It's definitely the best value I've seen for an equal temper tuned harp OTB

I was pleasantly surprised by this Harmonica - not one sour reed - I purchased a Rocket a while back - I purchased it because everyone was always carrying on about how great the Rockets are - I had several reeds on that one that were a real pain to get adjusted. This Mars was perfect right out of the box - it’s a very comfortable Harmonica to play - I love the round holes - Ron shipped it lightening fast -
Thanks for the great customer service Ron.
Cheers

Doesn't bother my nickel allergy!

My wife bought me a Kongsheng Mars several years ago because the round holes were something of a novelty. Nevertheless, it had a great sound and the shape of the holes don't seem to make any difference. I've tried most brands and I keep coming back to my Kongshengs.
I'm allergic to nickel and most harps just don't work for me. The stainless steel cover plates on the Mars must have a low content of nickel because they don't give me lip or tongue sores like so many other brands do.
Perhaps my best suggestion however, is to purchase yours from Rockin Ron. I've been buying from him for years and I usually get my harp the next day. How great is that! I recommend Rockin Ron to everyone.
